  1. Big Two-Hearted River:
this part shows how Hemmingway descripes Nick by descriping another character:
in the story , Nick makes coffee, but his friend Hopkins has once told him how to make the best coffee. Nick disagrees with him, but still Nick makes the coffee Hopkins way to see which way is the best.
Hopkins is a rich, serious polo player + a serious coffee maker.
Nick is not a rich, serious polo player and is not serious about the making of his coffee.
this shows that Hopkins and Nick are the complete opposite of each other.

  2. ummary of the story Big Two hearted river – part one.

Nick is by the train station (civilisation) and goes into the burned down city (The civilisation tried to control the wilderness, but that didn’t work out – therefore the foundations are left behind as a sign of that). He goes over the bridge, which symbolizes the connection between the civilisation and the wilderness, into the wilderness and walk for a long time. When it gets dark he finds a spot to stay for the night. He put up a tent and he is very hungry. He starts a fire and makes some spaghetti and beans for dinner. After the dinner he wants some coffee and meanwhile he prepares the coffee he think back on a discussion he had with his friend Hopkins, who is the contrast to Nick, because he is rich and plays polo. Then he feels tired and go to bed.

  3. Big Two-Heated River:
For the Wednesday lesson we read form page 177 to 184 ending whit “Now he was hungry”. In this part Nick gets of a train and enters a place, where the whole city is burned. He crosses a bridge and enters the wilderness. He walks for a day and sets camp near the river in the evening. He puts up a tent and then he is hungry.
We analyzed the text and found that: the fact that he gets of a train which symbolizes civilization and enters the burned city shows us how he leaves the civilization and enters the deserted wilderness. Also when he crosses the bridge over the life full blue river, it is in contrast to the black and burned city. The bridge is a bridge between life and death/civilization and wilderness. The fact that he feels pain form the hard work while walking makes him feel alive, in contrast to the dead country.
Nick feels good because he leaves everything behind.
When he puts up his tent he does it very systematically, this we think is because of his father and the training he had in the army. He has done it all before.
For the Friday lesson we read form page 184 to 187 in this par nick cooks his food very systematically and makes his coffee the Hopkins way. He thinks about Hopkins while he is drinking his coffee and then he goes to bed.
